Direct instruction
Imagine trying to play a high stakes board game without knowing how many spaces you may move or how points are earned. Frustrating, and slow.
The ISEE Upper Level works the same way. Before we dive into math and verbal strategies, you need to understand the structure of the exam. Today we crack the code on the sections, the clock, and the scoring rules, so you can walk into the testing center with total confidence.
The ISEE Upper Level is broken into five parts, and you take them in this exact order.
| Order | Section | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Verbal Reasoning: synonyms and sentence completions | 40 | 20 minutes |
| 2 | Quantitative Reasoning: logic, word problems, quantitative comparisons | 37 | 35 minutes |
| 3 | Reading Comprehension: six reading passages | 36 | 35 minutes |
| 4 | Mathematics Achievement: algebra, geometry, and other curriculum math | 47 | 40 minutes |
| 5 | Essay: a written response to a prompt | 1 prompt | 30 minutes |
You also get two scheduled breaks during the exam, which are your chance to stretch and reset your brain.
Look at those time limits again and something critical jumps out. You have very little time per question.
That is all you get per question in Verbal Reasoning, with 40 questions in 20 minutes.
Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematics Achievement all land a little under 60 seconds per question.
With numbers like those, you cannot afford to spend five minutes on one difficult question. Pacing is your top priority: keep moving and protect your momentum.
Here is the most important secret of the ISEE. There is absolutely no penalty for guessing.
| What is on your answer sheet | What it scores |
|---|---|
| A correct answer | 1 point |
| A wrong answer | 0 points |
| A blank bubble | 0 points |
A blank bubble and a wrong answer both earn zero, which makes leaving a question blank the only real mistake available to you on this test.
Worked examples
Scenario. You are finishing Mathematics Achievement when the proctor announces one minute remaining. You look down and see 5 questions still completely blank. What is your move?
Never let time expire with empty bubbles on your sheet. A blind guess is statistically better than a guaranteed zero.
Scenario. In Quantitative Reasoning, question 8 is a complex multi step word problem that has you stumped. Question 9 is quick arithmetic you could finish in 10 seconds. You are tempted to spend 4 minutes on question 8 to prove you can do it.
Every question carries exactly the same weight.
Do not let one difficult question steal the time you need to answer three easy ones.
Scenario. You start Verbal Reasoning and hit a word you have never seen in your life. You are tempted to spend 2 minutes cracking it open with roots and prefixes.
In the fastest section of the test, momentum is everything.
Knowing when to walk away from a word you do not know is a skill, and it buys you time for the questions you can actually answer.
